Bookmaking Workshops Spring & Summer Programme 2009

Unique handmade books are a wonderfully accessible art form somewhere between conventional books and paper sculpture, they usually have pages but may not always be made of paper. They can be used for exploring or containing many ideas and forms of creative expression but can also be simply beautiful in themselves -empty and full of possibility. Unique books draw on a range of art and craft disciplines in their making - painting, drawing, stitching, paper folding/construction, calligraphy and graphic design but basic structures are easily learned, introducing one to endless possibilities. Handmade books make uniquely personal gifts and can be used for memories or journeys or to honour a special person or occasion.

Decorating Papers
This will be a fun day exploring all manner of methods of decorating paper! These will be suitable for creating handmade books and for other paper crafts like card making. We will try lots of different painting techniques, make paste papers and create our own simple rubber stamps. Come prepared for an inspiring and messy day resulting in lots of unique papers to use in your projects.
Saturday May 23rd 10am-4.30pm £48

Japanese Stitched Books
The Japanese Stab Binding technique uses exposed stitches around the spine to bind single pages together, which makes it very suitable for binding series of prints or pages of poems. In this workshop we will use different traditional stitching patterns to make several soft cover books and a small hardcover album., using a variety of beautiful papers. A wide range of threads and embellishments for stitching will be available to use.

Make a Hardback Notebook in a Day
This will be an introduction to case binding where you will learn to make a hardcover single section stitched A5 notebook or sketchbook. It will have your unique combination of hand painted and/or decorative papers for the cover and endpapers, cartridge paper pages and a bookcloth spine, finished with ribbon ties.
